
Code Enforcement & Inspections Department
This department enforces all the codes and ordinances that pertain to licensing, permits, and inspections of private property for compliance with codes related to the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens. This department includes the Office of Code Enforcement and Building Inspections It is responsible for the following tasks:
Building Inspections Office
Please consult our list of permit applications to see if you require a building permit. Note that permits ARE required for decks, garden sheds, swimming pools, roofing and siding. Permits are not required for fences (but must adhere to our code). If you are unsure the nature of the work you are undertaking requires a permit please call this office. Various inspections will be undertaken by this department. Please consult your building permit for a list of those required inspections. It is the owner or the contractor responsibility to schedule an inspection, please call in the relevant inspection 24 hours in advance to 422-6616 ext 164.
Permit applications are processed in the order they are received. Please note permits will not be processed until all information has been verified. In some cases additional information may need to be supplied to the City of Milford.
Be aware that if you hire a contractor to undertake your building project, they must be in possession of a valid City of Milford contractor’s license.
As Milford divides both Kent and Sussex County, often a county building permit is required, as well as a Milford building permit. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure all permits have been obtained. Please contact the appropriate county agency to determine if a county permit is required. Code Enforcement Office
Reference the list of license applications to apply for a Contractor or Residential Rental Operators License.
Contractors’ license requirements include a copy of a currents State of Delaware business license and proof of liability insurance. Annual fee is $100, prorated $25 per quarter.
All single family and two family dwellings must be registered as a rental unit under a residential rental operators license. Annual cost is $25 per license.

Complaints concerning housing standards and/or property maintenance are taken via phone (422-6616 ext 178), E-mail (jdarsney@milford-de.gov), or by logging a complaint at the city offices. All complaints are logged in and investigated on a priority basis.
