The Community Policing Division was established in 1992 using monies from a Federal Grant program. Officers assigned to the divsion target high crime areas of the city and use various techniques to help communities decrease crime in their area.

The Community Policing Division consists of a School Resource Officer whom is certified by the National Association of School Resource Officers (www.nasro.org) currently, the School Resouce Officer is a certified instructor with NASRO, and assists with the teaching of school resource courses throughout the east coast. The School Resource Officer is assigned to the Milford School District and acts as a peer to students and an advisor on crime and criminal matters to the staff and administration of the school district. The officer is responsible for investigating all crimes which occur within schools.

A Community Resources Officer works within the Community Policing Division and is tasked with providing targeted services to area communities. The officer meets with tenants and management of housing complexes, and provides foot and bike patrol within these targeted areas. The Community Resource Officer acts as a point of contact for Neighborhood Watch Organizations, and helps start Neighborhood Watch Teams in local communites (www.ncpc.org). The Community Resource officer is a certified School Resource Officer and assists as a School Resource Officer when necessary.

The Division oversees the Narcotics Investigation Unit which is responsible for undercover drug investigations within the City. This officer teams with other Milford officers, drug investigation units of other departments, and the DEA, to investigate drug related criminal activies within the city. This officer is given Statewide Jurisdiction by the Delaware Attorney General and assists in other jurisdictions when requested.

In 2006, the Division launched a Seasonal Police Officer program. This program is targeted toward local youth 18-21 years of age whom have an interest in a law enforcement career. The Seasonal Officers undergo training in the early spring and take to the streets between May and September, riding bikes and conduction foot patrols within the city. The Seasonal Officers also assist the patrol division with investigations, traffic control, and crowd control at various times. Seasonal Officers work a rotating schedule consistiing of 12-16 hours per week, mostly in the evenings.

Other functions which are conducted by the Community Policing Division are:
Holiday Season Toy and food Drive
Shoplifting and Worthless Check Training for Businesses
Educational booths and various events during the year
Assistance to local organizations such as the Boy/Girl Scouts of America, HeadStart, Milford Boys and Girls Club, and local day care organizations

The Community Policing Division works with all divisions of the department as well as various city departments to ensure professional, quality law enforcement services.
