City Elections

The annual municipal election is held on the fourth Saturday in April between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Except that in any year when the fourth Saturday in April falls between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, the annual municipal election shall be held on the third Saturday of April.

The election shall be held under the supervision of an Election Board, consisting of not less than 3, nor more than 5 electors of the City as appointed by the City Council. The Election Board shall be Judges of the election and shall decide upon the legality of the votes offered.

Qualification for Mayor and City Council:

No person shall be eligible for election as Mayor unless he or she is a citizen of the United States of America, a bona fide resident of the City of Milford and has continuously resided therein for a period of 2 years preceding the day of the election, is over the age of 18 years prior to the day of the election, has not been convicted of a felony, submits a criminal background check of the person's entire criminal history record from the State Bureau of Identification, and is nominated therefore, as hereinafter provided.

2026 Mayor Candidate Information

No person shall be eligible for election as a City Council Member unless he or she is a citizen of the United States of America, a bona fide resident of the Ward in the City of Milford where they are seeking election and has continuously resided therein for a period of one year preceding the day of the election, is over the age of 18 years prior to the day of the election, has not been convicted of a felony, submits a criminal background check of the person's entire criminal history record from the State Bureau of Identification, and is nominated therefore, as hereinafter provided.

2026 City Council Candidate Information

ONLY STATE OF DELAWARE REGISTERED VOTERS residing within the limits of the City of Milford, OR ELIGIBLE NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY OWNERS, whose property is deeded in the voter’s individual name, will be permitted to vote in City elections.

Residents:

Persons registered through the State of Delaware (or Kent County or Sussex County Departments of Election) are qualified to vote in a City of Milford election or referendum. Residents who need to register to vote must contact the Department of Elections – Sussex County Office at 302-856-5367 or complete their registration online here.

Qualified Non-Residents:

Persons who reside within the City of Milford boundaries for at least 30 days prior to the registration deadline, or natural persons over the age of 18 years of age that own property within the City of Milford, at least 30 days prior to the registration deadline, shall be entitled to one vote at said annual municipal election or special election. A Corporation, Partnership, Limited Partnership, or other legally created entity is prohibited from registering and voting as a non-resident property owner unless property within the City is titled in an individual name.

It is the responsibility of those registered voters who own property in more than one Ward to declare at least 60 days prior to the election which Ward they will vote in on the day of the election. In the event a person owns property in the City in addition to their place of residency, he or she may vote once only where he or she resides
